To provide protection from malware, all computers should have anti-virus software installed and up to date. There are many providers of anti-virus software. Companies like Symantec, Norton, McAfee, and AVG to name a few. If you have purchase a new computer, its likely a free trial version of one of these has been installed. While these work fine, over time, they usually expire, and require you to pay for extending the protection. Additionally, some of these can cause your computer to start running slower, and become a nuisance.

There are also "free" anti-virus software available, that are just as effective in protecting your computer. The anti-virus software recommended by RS Technology Resources is Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft has developed a great anti-virus software that seems to work very efficiently with all Microsoft programs (eg. Windows XP, Windows 7, Microsoft Office, etc.), and even better - its free!

Click on this link and it will take you to the Microsoft site where you can download Microsoft Security Essentials.

NOTE: Before installing this software, REMOVE your old anti-virus programs.  This can be done by doing the following:
  • Click on "Start" button, and select "Control Panel"
  • Select "Programs" selection, and in that window, select "Uninstall a program"
  • All your computer's programs will appear. Find the anit-virus software program you are using, select it, and hit the "uninstall tab"
  • Follow the instructions to uninstall. You will likley have to reboot your computer when you are finished uninstalling the anti-virus software
